Journalism is stating facts and telling stories with a
purpose. Along with a number of important responsibilities the public holds
journalist accountable for. The first obligation as a journalist is to be
truthful, while striving to present an accurate, well-thought out explanation
of the story being covered. The public depends on the journalist to supply
reliable facts that are put in a clear and meaningful context. Inaccuracy is unacceptable
and there is no room for it in journalism. This will only create distrust
from the public and lower the credibility of the journalist and the source if
inaccuracy occurs. Accuracy, fairness, and lack of bias are extremely
essential in news stories. As a journalist it is important to be as transparent
as possible about sources and methods because it allows the public to make
their own assessment of the information. Another major responsibility as a journalist
is to grab the attention of the public by making sure the information presented
is interesting, useful and relevant.
Last but not least, following all rules and laws of journalism is a must.
Confidentiality and privacy is another imperative responsibility when gathering
information for and from the public. The role of a journalist is vital and
their responsibility to the public is just as significant. The public plays a
tremendous part in the journalism industry. Therefore, the responsibilities
journalist have regarding the public needs to be fully acknowledged and not
taken for granted. Both parties need each other and rely on one another.
